A team of ten golfers aged over 60 represented The Ashley Wood Golf Club in the Knighton Heath Knock Out Cup at Sherborne Golf Club
The two Captains only had one job to do, and that was to pick a date for the match to take place in some half decent weather. Nigel Mobbs (Sherborne) and Steve Cheshire (Ashley Wood) failed miserably to do this.
The first two hours of the match were played in driving, icy rain and the whole match in very strong winds.
Despite the unfavourable conditions the match produced some very good golf and took place in the expected friendly and sporting atmosphere.
Some bright sunshine in the later part of the afternoon lifted our spirits and allowed us to dry off a bit.
Despite a home win for Sherborne of 6.5 to 3.5, the match was incredibly close with 9 out of the 10 singles matches being decided on the 18th hole, it really could have gone either way, but unfortunately for Ashley Wood, it didn’t
Thanks to Sherborne for hosting and good luck to them in the next round of the competition.
A big thank you to all the Ashley Wood Golfers who have made themselves available for this competition, I’m really sorry that not everyone could be picked.
For the 10 who braved the elements and for the three nominated reserves thank you all for your efforts, we went down but we went down fighting.
The squad now moves into the plate competition where we hope to go further than the fantastic semi final place that we achieved last year.
