Our team of over 60s went to Came Down for our first round match in the Knighton Heath Knockout.
With perfect playing conditions, bright sunshine and relatively light winds and the course in good condition we set off with high hopes.
For those that are not familiar with the format, the Knighton Heath Knockout Trophy is an inter club competition for golfers who have managed to reach the ripe old age of 60.
Each round is played as 10 singles matches off full handicap and the Ashley Wood team of Mark Baber, Tony Lock, Colin Miller, Andy Armitage, Andre La Bouchardiere, Guy Davis, Steve Pardey, Steve Cheshire, Alan Millward and Dave Shepherd looked strong. Indeed shots received and given between the two teams were not very many with the biggest difference of 3 and overall shots reasonably well balanced between the two sides.
Unfortunately and inevitably home advantage plays a large part in the result of this format.
So despite great wins for Mark and Tony and a spirited half from Alan the team were beaten 7 1/2 to 2 1/2 and so Came Down progress to the second round. Congratulations
Still on the bright side the match was played with excellent sporting spirit and thank you to our hosts and even though we exit the main competition we will be in the draw for the plate when it is made in early May.
Finally I would just like to say a big thank you to our team, particularly those who were parachuted in at short notice when other players became unavailable. Also a big thank you to those players who made themselves available for this fixture but were unlucky enough not to be asked to play this time. I will be relying on a large pool of players for our next match.
Happy golfing
Steve Cheshire
